When Battles Rage

"That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning--there were all the dead bodies!"

2 Kings 19:35

If you are in an ongoing battle right now, then this page is for you!  There are two great Battles in the Bible that stand out to me.  One involves my favorite Bible story EVER and the other involves David, when he was King.

Story 1 goes like this, Hezekiah is about to be wiped out.  His enemy has scoffed at his God and sent him a letter.  I LOVE this story from 2 Kings 19!

Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Give ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.

“It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.”

This story fits well with our lives right now.  People are saying horrible things about Christians...ISIS is slaughtering us right and left. Nations citizens are badmouthing other Christians and our beliefs these days.  Even our own brothers and sisters are picking us off like flies.  I see it happening in front of my very eyes.  Some of these attempts are landing at my and Lisa's doorsteps. So like Hezekiah, we take these messages to the Lord.  We have the FAITH to do this.  That is what is missing in our world today...faith.  People no longer believe in God or if they do, they believe He is not omnipotent...and will not fight in their place.  They have not learned how to give their battles to the Lord like Hezekiah! This king knew he was helpless against the surrounding army and that his only defense was the Almighty.  But what a great defense that was!  This was by far the greatest battle EVER!

Same chapter starting in verse 35:

That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.

WOW!  Imagine waking up the next morning and seeing that!  Why don't they make Hollywood movies on THAT story!  Hezekiah didn't have to lift a finger!  This is when the Shield of Faith from the armor of God becomes so important.  Do you put it on every day?? It is a necessity in today's world.

Story 2 goes like this, it's about King David.  Remember, he was the one that killed Goliath with one stone.  Children still sing about that today, thousands of years later.  But this is not the Battle I am talking about.  Mine is found in 1 Chronicles 14.

Once more the Philistines raided the valley; so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

Whoa!  Imagine listening for THAT sound!  Here you are, a soldier waiting to go up against a tough enemy, possibly to your death.  And suddenly you hear this loud marching sound...from the trees above your head!  I tried to find a picture of that but no drawing did the story justice.  You just have to close your eyes and imagine it.

This is what we need to do today.  In both Bible stories, the kings went to God first and asked Him what to do. They heard His answer and put faith in that answer by having Him go before them in battle. People, this is what we need to practice during this most difficult time in our lives.  We do NOT take matters into our own hands...this is a trick from the enemy!  We have come so far in our relationship with Christ as His Bride now, that surely we have the wisdom to let Him handle our battle.  He is our Kinsman Redeemer...it is His joy to fight the battle for us!  We just have to have faith in Him to do that.  Do you have that faith today?  Show Him your struggles.  If it is a written document where someone is crying out against you, take that to Him like Hezekiah and point to it in the Courts of Heaven.  Do not take on your enemy in that court!  Simply tell God what is happening (of course He already knows).  This is what I did with my potential third diagnosis of cancer.  I literally got on my knees by my couch and put the papers from the doctor in front of me and read the story of Hezekiah. It's the same God.  He is the same God that gives Lisa visions!  He is the same God that spoke to Moses!  He is the same God that directs your life and whom you give praise and worship to!  He NEVER EVER changes!  This is just a comforting fact for me.  I can rely on Him.  You can too, you can rely on God.  You may not get the answer that you want or expected, but God WILL fight your battle!  You just have to have faith.  We don't always get the reconciliation that we prayed for, or the answer that we had wanted, but we WILL get God's answer!

And we must forgive!  Oh my goodness, at times this is the hardest thing to do and you all know this.  Yet the Lord commands that we do this!  We are to forgive...seventy time seven times!  Over and over we need to forgive.  If we harbor just one piece of unforgiveness in our heart, then our Lord does not forgive us and He tells us this in Matthew 6:15.  This is important!  I also heard a wise piece of advice many years ago...if you do not forgive someone, then you become a slave to that person because you are constantly thinking about the awful things they did to you.  Once this continues, then the enemy is allowed to whisper in your ear because your focus is no longer on God, it is on your enemy.  We are not to live that way.  We are free in Christ! How dare satan try to trip us up in these last miles to go in our race!

Finally, when you do have that kind of faith and you have already forgiven, then you can rest in Him because He is your hope.  He has plans for you and He wants to carry them out but He cannot if you simply don't let Him.  Don't fight your battle, just give it to the Lord and He will BE your hope!

"My message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,  so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God."

1 Corinthians 2:4-5
