Self Control

Posted on April 19, 2017 at 10:05 AM

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."

Guys, I have not yet been able to master self control in regards to food so I am asking the Master's help.  I am sharing this process with you in case you'd like to tag along for whatever reason...to pray for me, to also practice this fruit on food or another item that has you needing help.  In this case, I am starting a 10 day Daniel fast based on Jordan Rubin's Maker's Diet Revolution book.

OR here is a free link for guidance if you are interested in a food fast:

I have been thinking about this for a few weeks now...I fasted once for 3 days, and did this Daniel fast once but ate bread.  I simply cannot feel too ill that I cannot work.  So I will be praying about this and giving it to the Lord.  I woke up still praying about it this morning and told the Lord to "send me help".  I started to look up dieticians in the area, etc...and He led me to The Makers Diet book.  I already own one and have worked with eating like this before, in fact that's why we do not eat shellfish at home.  However I definitely did not stick with the program so I plan to start this Thursday or Friday again.   Feel free to comment below...I'll need all the encouragement I can get as this will need to be a change of life plan!  And it would be WONDERFUL if I could share the next 10 days with others in the same boat!

Excellent Threads! Thanks for the update!

I have maintained my self-control goal for 10 days and it seems easier to continue now.

Well I'm down 2 lbs on the '8 hour diet' that I started last Wednesday! Like I said before, the hardest part is the last 1-2 hours before breakfast at about 10 or 10:30 but not excessively difficult. I definitely plan to continue it. And that has been without exercise so I definitely need to find time to get on my bike -- and so I can get on Pinterest which I've stayed away from these 10 days, lol! Praise the Lord for His wisdom & strength in this self-control test! I feel like I've passed it 😊

Of course! You don't even have to be dieting...this is about self-control of ANYTHING that is a problem to you. My example is food as that is my self-control problem. But it can be anything.

OK then! Count me in! :)

Hope, will I be able to join the group if I am not using the Daniel plan? Have used South Beach in the past and it was very good. Got rid of processed foods, limited sugars, even the shellfish was pretty much "not good." It promoted whole grains, wheat pasta, hummus, quinoa, veggies and lots of fish.. Not much red meat except a porterhouse but that is too expensive these days anyways.! This is not vegan but phase 1 is pretty strict.

Hi Hope, i purchased the book yesterday and it is very helpful. Well worth $15. Lots of good food ideas like meusli with almond milk for breakfast, whole grain rice cakes with peanut butter, smoothies, salads, soups, and many other ideas. I will be changing one thing for sure about the diet restrictions too. I will include veggie broth as a drink. Her daniel fast allows only water for drinks. f we can make smoothies which i know Daniel didnt drink, i believe veggie broth is ok. I need something warm to drink to replace coffee. Im currently suffering from a bad headache because im weaning off sugar and coffee/caffeine. Last year i didnt wean myself off these addictions, and when it came time to begin the fast i couldnt pray for severals days because i went cold turkey on sugar and coffee and the detox symptoms caused severe body aches and headaches.. The headache i had last year was so intense i actually believed my brain had blown up inside my skull! I reccommend weaning from current food addictions before beginning the fast. This will increase the time we spend focusing on God. Amen!

Guys I am really getting excited about this! I think Robin is on to something to start in May...but this fast in this book is pretty rigid so I'm not sure I will follow that. And that is the beauty of this. We don't have to follow any one thing unless the Lord leads us to that. Each of us has a path to self control over what we are going to do, but as members of the body of Christ, we will be joined together in this! Our prayers will surely help each other and reverberate throughout this small group, and we will be changed much like the Water video I posted today! :-)

My dear Hope,
I would like to join you in this 10 day fast. I have struggled as well, gee whiz, for about 40 years. I cry to God for self-control regarding my eating habits and even my relationship with food. I really want to be normal and not think about food so much?really, that food not be an issue anymore. I want to eat to God's glory.
I know this has been a tormenting demonic stronghold in my life since I can remember. The enemy perverted my relationship with food as a young girl and it has been so crazy. It is gluttony -- plain and simple. I won't go into all the details (20 years of severe bolemia), pills, super gym rat etc. Nothing has worked coming from my hands.
This has to be God and Him alone. I have thought about the 'fast and pray' and have been afraid of the fasting part. Afraid I couldn't do it, afraid I wouldn't be able to work. I am now 62 years old. Enough is enough. I feel like I can only crawl to God and ask Him to please help me one more time. The preoccupation with food interferes with my calling, the anointing on my life, my boldness for God and my love for others.
I?m putting together a prayer for self control, including ?casting down imaginations?? and ?no temptation?? I?m looking forward to getting started.

Hey guys, shall we start this journey on May 1? That gives us two weekends to get rid of bad or extra food if that is what you are doing...also gives us some time to plan what direction we want our individual paths to take.

Do you want to do this in emails? This is a post that anyone can read and it would be more private if we emailed. Thoughts?

I believe the ways of the Lord are to follow the Old Testament rules for the most part. At the same time, we are not forced to, nor is it a rule or law but rather something smart that the Lord has shown us. For example the unclean animals are "detestable"...shellfish ..they are ground feeders. They eat dead fish and other icky stuff so it's a no brainer really. God knew what He was doing with that and other animals.

I would caution those who are told to start out not eating meat, then to go to almost eating nothing. The reason is that the Fallen know that when we are cleansed, we can hear them as clearly as the Lord. I've seen them tell others to go on some diets of vegan etc. The Lord wants us to eat organic like you guys are speaking about, as clean as possible! And not overeat which is what I am working on.

Imagine what the Millenium will be like with perfect food like that from Eden...growing right here on earth! I look forward to those times!

I was doing pretty good on a sugar-free diet for several weeks before Easter but fell off the wagon last week. I've been thinking I should get back on it. I'll have to look more at this book, Hope, to see what this program is. Thanks for the link!

I thought it was just me, but I'm fascinated that the Lord has lead several of us to this. Sister Di has said the Lord told her "no more meat" recently. This, of course, is His direction to her and not for everybody, but just prior to hearing his directions to her, I felt the leading to fix my eating habits and weight, as well. I love how He confirms, "Yes daughter, this is from Me!". Prayers for everyone's success. This is more about weight and health, it is truly about obedience and self control for me.

Hi all, Last year the Lord led me to fast for the month of May. I have been sensing that He wants me to also fast again this May. I feel led to follow the daniel fast this time. Thank you Hope for sharing the daniel fast link and for helping us all follow Our Lords leading. Fasting will help us develop self control, crucify the flesh, be healthier, and most importantly draw closer to Him. I will pray for everyones success.

We will be transformed soon anyway, yet I feel still an urging. I just want to be sure I am not doing this because if vanity but because God wants me to be my healthiest me for tines to come. I am vet y I'll at the moment, buy when I'm feeling better next week, I wil be looking seriously into making this change. Thanks for sharing!

I have also read the book and believe it is a healthful way of life. I have slowly over 5 years changed the food I eat. Not totally clean yet. And sugar is my biggest downfall. Weight has never been an issue for me but I know healthy eating produces a healthy body for a longer life. At 75 I rarely get sick even though I work daily with children and I live in Michigan (cold winters).

I too have been led by the Lord to some dietary changes recently and feel looking back that the Lord has been trying to get me to do this for awhile now. I recently started a juice cleanse fast and will plan on the eat to live diet by Dr. Joel Fuhrman when my fast is done. I ended up finally having to commit due to health issues and my body needed to detoxify. John Rose has a youtube channel with lots of good videos on juice fasting or feasting as he calls it. Hope this helps!
